Suit Lapel Buttonhole (Purpose and Function)

Very often, we found a buttonhole that has no button on the lapel of suits but we assume it’s a mere decoration. In the past, the lapel buttonholes usually accommodate a button sewn to the underside of the opposite lapel which allowed men to button their jackets all the way up in cold weather. This is not the case today, lapel buttonholes are now left off the suit without any button.

In recent fashion, the Lapel buttonhole functions to house the boutonniere. Then, What is a boutonniere? It’s a small flower or bunch of flowers worn in a button or pinned to the lapel of a jacket. Apart from this, the buttonhole has no other function.
